Part 3… What’s on in August?
With August on the island usually meaning the shut down of businesses and offices to take time to spend with family and enjoy the summers weather, the hottest month of the year is usually the host to many summer events to celebrate the island and all that it has to offer. August famously is the month that the Spanish royal family visit Mallorca also and stay in their summer residence at Marivent Palace.
One annual event that is the highlight of August in Mallorca is the prestigious Copa del Rey. For almost 40 years now the waters of the bay of Palma have been filled with the worlds best yachting crews and racing yachts that compete in the exclusive regatta. This month the Eastern village of Cala D’Or celebrate their local festivities with almost 2 weeks of parties being held around the area for everyone to enjoy. Similarly the Fiesta de La Patrona in Pollença is highly popular and is held every year depicting the famous battle between the Moors and Christians, where the locals dress in 16th-century clothes and reenact the fight against the Ottoman pirates who, in 1550, attacked this town. Pollença old town is the hub for all the celebrations that you will want to see.
Moving slightly westwards, anyone who is a fan of live, classical music really should visit the village of Deia, for the annual Deia International Music Festival 2021. The festival started off at the Deia church, but now is located at the stunning country house and museum of Son Marroig and can boast some of the most talented musical artists from around the world that attend.
We cannot finish without mentioning the beautiful sunsets that the month of August offer us in Mallorca. With the nighttime not setting in until a little later, a sunset drink is the perfect way to end any summer evening.
